Flash Monster 2017

“It’s very hard to create
a new monster.”

– George A. Romero

Halloween is our favorite time of year here at Molotov HQ, and we’re going back to the theme that started it all. We ran our first #FlashMonster contest back in 2014—and that year, a mandrake homunculus spawned under a gallows won the day.

So once again, we want you to retreat to the lab and not come back out until you can unleash some of the most intriguing or vile abominations ever to hit the page. Gore is cool, but so is dramatic irony and unnerving ambiguity. Basically, though, the types of monsters you can explore are limited only by your sick, sick imagination.

Therefore, monsters can include halitosis-afflicted yetis, haunted salad shooters, radioactive orangutans, reanimated bridge trolls with bad perms, acid-spitting hummingbirds, zombies that only crave vampire brains, pink mist that makes people eat their own lips, presidents with no souls, a pandemic spread by vaping mustache twirlers, sinister bubbles, telepathic bed bugs, hiccups that turn people inside-out, possessed fidget-spinners, or trees that hug back.

You can go as literal or as metaphorical as you want with your monster, and the more unusual the better. Surprise us. We don’t want to read 20 stories about werewolves any more than we want to see 20 stories about how greed is the greatest monster of all.

Speaking of which, the top three entries will win cold, hard cash.

$200 for Flash Monster 2017 winner

$100 for 2nd place

$50 for 3rd place

We also give mad props to 4th-10th place,
publishing them as Honorable Mentions in our Flash Monster mega-issue

and in a future print anthology, with contributor copy included.

Follow these guidelines, and you could have some extra coin in your pocket, and some bragging rights as the Flash Monster 2017 winner.

– All submissions must absolutely be under 1,000 words, and we tend to look more kindly on 750 or fewer because…SQUIRREL!

– All contest submissions will be read blind, so we won’t be playing favorites. Sorry, Mom.

– Please paste your submission into the corresponding field. Do not list your name anywhere in your submission or we’ll assume that you don’t know how to read.

– Costs $6 to enter during our early-bird period and $7 after that—because, you know, gotta fund the prize money somehow. (Sorry, no refunds.)

– We reserve the right to extend deadlines if necessary (and you can expect our usual week-ish Procrastinator’s Special–with corresponding increase in submission fee for you slackers).

– Submissions must be previously unpublished work, and you will retain copyright (duh). By entering this contest you give us permission to publish your work online and in our future print anthology.

– No limit on how many entries you can submit, but you must submit them one at a time. Don’t just mash them all in there.

Early bird deadline is September 10th.  Soft deadline is 11:59 pm PST on October 20th, 2017.  Winners announced by October 30th and we’ll unleash the Flash Monster mega-issue at the stroke of midnight on Halloween.

– And, most importantly, this is a FLASH MONSTER contest, therefore it must contain a monstrous element of some kind. But again, this can be in any form imaginable.

So that means you can go all…

or all…

or all…

or all…

or even all…

Cook up something sinister.
