Flash Feast Contest

that fall down from the feast of the mind.

On the surface, this may seem like one of our most straightforward prompts: more or less, we want stories that involve food. Then again, it also just might be our most wide-open. After all, everything needs to consume to survive, so your options are quite literally endless. The act of eating runs the gamut from formal to primal; it can involve a satisfying a sophisticated palate or greedily sating our basest impulses. Procuring food can be an active hunt or the passive act of being fed. Humans have built rituals and customs around food preparation and consumption. It drives global industries. Wars have been fought over food. There’s even the potential that we become food ourselves. And there’s room in this contest for the consumption of things not normally considered food.

We’re also not only looking for stories about food, here, but rather the act of devouring, and that can get as biological, metaphysical, or paranormal as you’d like. If you’ve entered one of our contests before, or simply read what we publish, you know we’re hoping you get real weird with it. With that said, we’re not going to publish 10 cannibal stories, and biting into one poison dish is usually enough, so get unique with your Flash Feast entry if you want a seat at the table.

We like literary approaches, but we also dig genre and pulpy takes as well.  Art house or grindhouse. Subvert the usual fairytale and folk horror tropes or create something nobody’s ever seen before.

The top three entries will win cash money (USD).

$300 for Flash Feast winner

$200 for 2nd place

$100 for 3rd place

We also give mad respect to 4th-10th place,
publishing them in our Flash Feast mega-issue

and in a future print anthology.

Follow these guidelines, and you could come away with cash, online/print publication, and sweet, sweet glory.

– All submissions must absolutely be under 1,000 words, and we tend to look more kindly on 750 or fewer because… DELICIOUS SQUIRREL!

– All names are concealed on contest submissions during judging, so we won’t be playing favorites.

– Please paste your entry into the corresponding field. Do not list your name anywhere or we’ll assume you don’t know how to read.

– Entry fee is $8. (Sorry, no refunds.)

– We reserve the right to extend deadlines if necessary (and you can expect our usual week-ish Procrastinator’s Special with corresponding increase in entry fee for you slackers).

– Submissions must be previously unpublished work, and you will retain copyright. By entering this contest, you give us permission to publish your work (if selected for our Top 10) both online and in a future print anthology.

– No limit on how many entries you can submit, but you must submit them one at a time. Don’t just mash them all in there.

Contest soft deadline is end of day (PDT) Monday, June 13th, 2022. Winners announced on June 27th and we’ll unleash the Flash Feast mega-issue shortly thereafter.

– And, most importantly, this is a FLASH FEAST contest, so your entry must include food or something being consumed or devoured. But again, this can be in any form imaginable.

So that means you can do something like this…

or this…

or this…

or this…

or even this…

Dig in.
